PGA Tour: Following the shocking news that golf’s circuits had departed for an “uncomfortable” experience before the RBC Canadian Open, Rory McIlroy was happy to be back concentrating on his own game.
After a year since the debut of the Saudi-backed series, the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and Public Investment Fund (PIF), which finances LIV Golf, said on Tuesday that they were forming a newly established commercial operation to reorganise the sport.
McIlroy, who has frequently defended golf’s conventional circuits over the last 12 months, didn’t learn about the news until a few hours before it went viral. He acknowledged feeling like a “sacrificial lamb” in his role as a last line of defence against LIV Golf.
The world’s third-ranked golfer, who was going for a third straight Canadian triumph, shot a first-round 71 at Oakdale Golf & Country Club in Toronto. McIlroy was trying to get past a historic week for the game.
On Thursday, McIlroy said, “The most uncomfortable I’ve been in the last 12 months was my news conference yesterday. I would say that on Tuesday and Wednesday, my energy levels were dwindling fast.
“I wouldn’t say that I specifically saw the PGA Tour through that altruistic perspective. This is business, and playing golf is what I do for a living. So the more I can concentrate on that and put less emphasis on what occurred in the board room and more emphasis on the birdies and bogeys, the happier I’ll be.”
In an attempt to avoid discussing the shocking news of the week throughout their round, Mcllroy and Justin Rose, who shot a 69 in the opening round, failed.
“To better focus on what we’re doing outside, Justin Rose and I agreed to put off talking until lunch,” according to McIlroy.
‘No, let’s stop this,’ we said as we started to converse while strolling down the first. Let’s just concentrate on our golf and talk about other things when we get inside.
