DP World Tour: Thriston Lawrence won his fourth DP World Tour title with a one-shot victory at the BMW International Open, capitalising on Joost Luiten’s expensive finish.
The South African overcame a four-shot deficit on the final day at Golfclub Munchen Eichenried, shooting a three-under 69 with eight birdies and five bogeys to set the clubhouse aim at 13 under.
Luiten held a three-shot lead going into the final round but stayed in a tie until he three-putted the par-three 17th, missing a par-save attempt from three feet, leaving him needing a last-hole birdie to match Lawrence’s score.
The Dutchman had to pitch out after a poor drive on the penultimate par-five and missed the green with his third shot, settling for second after a final-round 74.
Lawrence had not finished in the top ten since his triumph on home soil in December, and he battled back tears during his post-round interview.
“It means a lot to me. To be honest, I’m a little emotional,” Lawrence said to Sky Sports.
“I spent six weeks in America and only made one cut. This is not a simple game. Sunday was a huge lift for me, and I gave it my best. I feel bad for Joost because I know how difficult this game is.
“I’m not sure why I’m so emotional, but it just shows how much it means to me, and to get my fourth victory in Germany is incredible.”
“I played really well [on Sunday], and I didn’t think I was going to make a par at one point; it was birdie, bogey, birdie, bogey – you’re just taking, giving, taking, giving.”
“I saw Joost miss that two-footer on 17, and I know how difficult putts around these greens are. It wasn’t easy out there, so I sympathise with him.
“I think that’s why I’m emotional because I know how difficult this game is and how much everyone wants to win.”
Luiten began the day three strokes ahead of compatriot Daan Huizing and rebounded from a bogey on the third with a birdie on the fifth to claim his eighth career victory and first since 2018.
However, that was his lone birdie of the day, and a bogey on the seventh was followed by nine straight pars before he three-putted the 17th, which Lawrence had birdied minutes before.
