DP World Tour: Robert MacIntyre opened up a two-shot lead following the first round of the DP World Tour’s Made in HimmerLand with an incredible back-nine birdie onslaught.
During a stunning opening-round 64 at HimmerLand Golf and Spa Resort, the two-time DP World Tour champion blended eight birdies with two bogeys, vaulting him ahead of nearest opponent Ross Fisher.
Fisher set the early clubhouse goal with a four-under 66, while Johannes Veerman and Nick Bachem tied for third with Daan Huizing and Ryder Cup contender Rasmus Hojgaard was four shots behind.
“It was really tough today,” remarked MacIntyre. “As I sat in my room this morning, I was relieved that I wasn’t out there. It improved somewhat. Obviously, the breeze was really strong, but at least there was no rain.
“Out there, it was just a mental battle, and I had to stay positive.” Dropped shots were certain to happen, so I simply had to seize the chances when they came, which happily I did.”
After missing his eight-foot eagle try, MacIntyre birdied the second and added another at the fifth, then balanced out an errant tee shot and par at the eighth to pick up a stroke at the next.
The Scot dropped back to one under after failing to get up and down from off the green to save par at the tenth, only to have his fortunes brighten when he nailed a long-range birdie from off the next green and rolled in from 30 feet at the par-three 12th.
MacIntyre rebounded from a poor tee shot at the 13th with a great up and down from the fairway to scramble a par, then took advantage of the following driveable hole for the first of two birdies.
A final-hole birdie helped him seal a back-nine 31 and extend his lead over Fisher, who was the choice of the morning wave after combining five birdies and a bogey during his first round.
