Hero Indian Open: Yannik Paul of Germany leads by one stroke coming into Sunday’s final round, one shot ahead of countryman Marcel Siem, who recorded a five-under 67 on Saturday.
Despite losing a five-shot lead following a difficult round on Saturday, Germany’s Yannik Paul remains the man to beat coming into the final round of the Hero Indian Open.
Paul, the runaway midway leader, got off to a rough start, making back-to-back bogeys at the second and third holes, giving his nearest opponents hope.
Nevertheless, despite a hat-trick of birdies from the sixth to take a three-shot lead at the turn, last week’s Thailand Classic runner-up Paul wasted a slew of birdie opportunities on the back nine before a bogey on the short 16th sliced his lead to a single shot.
He responded with a birdie from roughly 10 feet on the 17th, but with his countryman, Marcel Siem concluding his round with two consecutive birdies in the group ahead, Paul is now only one clear with 18 holes remaining.
Paul carded four birdies and three bogeys in his third-round 71 to finish the event at 11 under par.
Siem, a four-time DP World Tour champion who reclaimed his card at the qualifying school late last year, is alone in second position on 10 under following a 67 on Saturday, with Dutchman Joost Luiten two strokes back in third.
“I’m in a terrific position and I’m looking forward to playing with Marcel tomorrow,” Paul added, aiming to become a two-time DP World Tour winner on Sunday.
“Winning would be incredible. Such a famous event here, but I suppose that’s the difficult part.
“You don’t want to think forward, you want to be in the present because 18 holes is a lot of golf left.
“All I’ll do tonight is an attempt to get some rest and look forward to tomorrow.”
