Hero World Challenge: After Day 2 of the PGA Tour’s Hero World Challenge, Viktor Hovland of Norway is one stroke ahead of a group of four competitors, with Collin Moriwaka, Scottie Scheffler, and Xander Schauffele following close behind.
Currently ranked No. 2, Scheffler might reclaim the top spot if he wins. He stated, “I don’t like being No. 2.” I dislike coming in second place.
At Albany, Scheffler moved in that way against the strong wind. He played a four-under 68 on the back nine, leaving him in the group one shot behind the defending champion Hovland. He made four birdies in a run of five holes.
Hovland got three straight birdies on the back nine, chipped in for eagle for the second straight day, and shot 70 for a 36-hole total of five-under 139.
The highest-placed British golfer is Matt Fitzpatrick of England, who is five strokes off the lead.
Tiger Woods conducts a holiday tournament in the Bahamas for a 20-man field of top players, and scores there are normally substantially lower. On Thursday, the course was soggy and played slowly. On Friday, the 30 mph wind allowed everything to dry.
Xander Schauffele joined Scheffler, Cameron Young (69), and Morikawa (71) in the group one shot later after relying on exquisite wedge play to shoot a 68.
Tom Kim missed two strokes on the last three holes, finishing with a 72 and falling two shots short.
Scheffler received the Mark H. McCormack Award because he spent more weeks at No. 1 than any other artist this year. Four victories in the spring against top competition, including his maiden major, led to that. He last triumphed at the Masters.
With a victory in South Carolina in October, Rory McIlroy took his place, but Scheffler now has an opportunity to reclaim it, if only briefly. Regardless of what happens in the Bahamas, McIlroy is predicted to hold the top spot when the year is out.
