Hero World Challenge: At the Hero World Challenge on Saturday in Albany, Bahamas, Viktor Hovland shot a blistering eight-under-par round 64 with six birdies to increase his lead to three shots.
Scottie Scheffler is within striking distance at 10 under following his six-under 66, while Hovland is in contention to win the competition a second time at 13 under after 54 holes.
Justin Thomas (66) and Cameron Young (68, third-round) are five strokes further back at eight under.
Hovland shot the lowest round of the day on Saturday by making 10 birdies, one more than his all-time PGA Tour career high. Hovland has led or been tied for the lead after each of the first three rounds. Two bogeys, including the par-4 18th, were part of his round.
Hovland added, “I probably missed a 10-footer on the first hole and lipped out and I kind of thought, Here we go again,” but after that, a lot of putts went in.
“On a day like today, when the winds are calm and you can be a little bit more assertive, you need that. So was a lot of fun because there is no other method to make that many birdies.”
Hovland would join event host Tiger Woods in 2007 as the only player to successfully defend a championship at the competition.
Scheffler made an effort to stay within striking distance, recording five birdies and an eagle on the par-5 15th. The 20-player field has produced just two eagles so yet, and Scheffler has both of them.
Scheffler stated, “I played extremely well, maintained the ball in front of me, and hit a lot of fairways. I thought I did a fantastic job of just staying on track and making modifications for myself.
Xander Schauffele and Collin Morikawa both played identical rounds of 69 to tie for fifth place, six strokes back at seven under. At four under and nine strokes down, Jon Rahm (68) is alone in seventh place.
