Golf News: The six-time PGA Tour champion’s latest spectacular triumph at The Players is discussed by Paul McGinley, who also explains how Scottie Scheffler returned to the top of the global rankings.
At the risk of overusing the phrase, it was Tiger-esque in the manner he systematically won this tournament. The crucial factor was that he was cruising and making no mistakes.
All week long we talked about him being a horse in the gallops since he was under control and you just knew he had another gear. He had the fewest bogeys of anyone there by a considerable margin. He then simply picked off the par fives and won the competition.
Scheffler simply gave his standard tournament-winning performance. On the last day, he made a mistake early on, but he gradually corrected it. He didn’t receive the tournament; he managed it and won it.
It is difficult for me to see a deficiency in Scottie when I consider what other players lack. When you get to this rarefied atmosphere, so many guys hit the ball so well, chip and putt so well and have excellent teams around them, so you have to go between the ears to see the difference.
I believe he cuts himself off between the ears. Going into a large event with the lead, handling the pressure, and winning was not simple, but he did it with style.
Golf is a game of errors, so being able to recover from them is crucial. Great golfers have this quality in spades. Scheffler demonstrated to us just what kind of player he is.
Scheffler’s course management key
On a golf course, you never want to attack from the first hole because there are always places where you could crash and burn and need to take a little more time.
Scheffler mentioned that as he completed the first seven holes, he understood he was approaching the scoring portion of the golf course, which required a different frame of mind and a different approach.
This week, he aced the par-fives and outshot everyone else by five strokes. His strategy was crucial, as evidenced by the fact that he had five fewer bogeys than the other players—a difference of 10 strokes.
