The Masters: Despite having the opportunity to make significant history at Augusta National, Scottie Scheffler insists he is handling the Masters title defence no differently than any previous championship defence.
With a commanding three-shot victory in the previous year’s competition, Scheffler won his first major championship. This victory was part of a successful run of four victories in a row in a period of six tournaments to begin in 2022.
The American won The Players by five shots last month after successfully defending his championship there in February. Scheffler now has the opportunity to win seven tournaments in the past 14 months.
Only Jack Nicklaus, Sir Nick Faldo, and Tiger Woods have successfully defended their titles at The Masters, and Scheffler is sure that enjoyment comes before leaving a lasting legacy.
In his pre-event news conference, Scheffler remarked, “I think we build it up so much in our brains just because it’s The Masters and it is what it is, and it’s such a special tournament.”
“With the exception of arriving a little earlier on Sunday so I could play more golf, I’ve maintained my preparation largely the same as it was last year.
“On Thursday, everyone starts at even par as the tournament gets underway. I don’t get to start at one under just because you’re defending. I’ll approach it similarly to how I do with many other competitions.
“I don’t play for the legacy at the end of this. That said, it is truly an honour to be listed with players like Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, and Nick Faldo, but it doesn’t inspire me to come out and compete.
“Even though it’s so amazing and cool when it does, it doesn’t inspire me to stay here. I’m simply wanting to show up, give it my all, play well, and enjoy myself. Legacy is a challenging concept. I’ll be forgotten in 100 years, and it won’t be a huge problem.”
