Tiger Woods will have another chance to win The Masters this week, giving him a chance to tie the record for most victories ever. Despite this, he hasn’t mentioned any chances of adding to his major winning total.
Even though it was his first start since sustaining life-threatening injuries in a car accident 14 months prior, Tiger woods claimed he thought he could win the tournament before the 2022 battle. Nevertheless, Woods later changed his mind regarding his shape and fitness going into this week’s competition.
In his pre-tournament press conference, Woods admitted, “Last year, I wasn’t sure if I was going to play again at that time. For some reason, I kind of pushed it and everything kind of came together, which was good. I was able to cut.”
“I didn’t win the event, but just being able to play again was a minor accomplishment in and of itself. How many more I have left in me is unknown. I’m in a position to be grateful for the time I have here and to treasure the memories.
“[My] mobility is not where I would like it to be, but as I’ve already told you guys, I am really fortunate to have this leg. Although it has been modified and has some hardware, it is still mine. It has been and always will be difficult.”
Before his 25th competitive participation at Augusta, the world No. 1 played nine holes each of the next two days. Woods lacked the fitness that allowed him to win The Masters for a fifth time in 2019.
Woods continued, “My leg’s capacity for endurance in the future won’t ever be the same. I realise that. I can’t practise as often or compete in as many competitions because of this, but that’s okay because that’s what my future holds. That’s fine with me.
“I believe that right now, my game is better than it was last year. My endurance, I believe, has improved. Yet, it hurts a little bit more than it did the previous year simply because at the time I returned, I had not pushed it that much.
“I performed in LA in February before taking a little break and preparing for this. I simply need to be aware of how far I can push it. I can make a lot of shots, but moving ahead is going to be difficult for me. What is, is what is. I wish it were simpler.”
