The Players: Before the final round of The Players, Scottie Scheffler sat in front of the golfing press and maintained that winning the tournament was more significant than regaining the world’s No. 1 ranking, even though he now has both in his possession.
When the PGA Tour’s marquee event began, Scheffler was one of three players who had a chance to finish first in the world rankings. However, Jon Rahm’s mid-tournament withdrawal and Rory McIlroy’s missed cut eliminated all possibilities and returned control of the outcome to Scheffler.
Scheffler surged ahead with a third-round 65 before dominating an inexperienced leaderboard on the final day to clinch an amazing five-shot victory because Rahm and McIlroy were absent from the field.
By winning, Scheffler receives $4.5 million and joins Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus as the only players to ever hold The Players and The Masters at the same event. This is Scheffler’s sixth PGA Tour victory in just over 13 months.
What is coming next for Scheffler?
Scheffler takes a week off ahead of his championship defence at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play in Austin, Texas from March 22-26, when he will seek to join Woods as the back-to-back winner of the event.
As Scheffler travels to Augusta National for the first men’s major of the year, he may still be in first place in the global rankings. Scheffler overcame Kevin Kisner in the 2022 final and will be among the favourites once more.
In addition, a successful defence would make Scheffler the first player to win the Green Jacket twice since Woods in 2002, making him just the third world No. 1 to win The Masters in this century.
Scheffler remarked after his most recent triumph, “I think I’m just comfortable with where my game is. I feel like I’m getting better. Undoubtedly, I’m learning more and more. Knowing what you feel like and being able to anticipate it, in my opinion, is the most valuable thing.
“It’s going to be a good week leading up to the Masters. There will be a lot of great activities I get to do the week of the Champions Dinner. Everyone starts at even par by the time we hit the course on Thursday, so it probably won’t make much of a difference.”
