US Open: Scottie Scheffler, the world number one, is considering switching putters in order to better his woeful performance on the greens ahead of the US Open in Los Angeles.
Scheffler has had an outstanding season on the PGA Tour, successfully defending his WM Phoenix Open title, taking a commanding victory at The Players, and placing no worse than 12th in his previous 16 global outings.
This season, the 26-year-old has lived up to his title as the best player in the world from tee to green, averaging 2.78 strokes gained per round and topping the rankings in various categories, but has struggled to replicate that domination on the greens.
Scheffler, who came runner-up at the PGA Championship last month, is 148th on the PGA Tour in strokes gained putting this season and has been experimenting with a new flat stick at this week’s major at Los Angeles Country Club.
“I never take equipment changes lightly,” Scheffler remarked at his pre-tournament press conference. “It’s strange that I’ve been struggling with my putter for the past few weeks.
“PGA [Championship]” I honestly felt like I rolled it quite well, with only a couple putts that lipped out that should have gone in.
“Obviously, Memorial [Tournament] had an off week on the greens, or they would’ve won that one. You know, sometimes you just have to bring another putter around to terrify the first one.
“I’ve never been the type to overthink things, so I try to keep things as simple as possible. I looked at the one that’s a little bigger, and I’m still not sure what I think of it.”
Last week, Scheffler worked with long-time coach Randy Smith to attempt to find some greens improvement, and the six-time PGA Tour champion was happy to maintain his consistent sequence of results in recent months despite not being comfortable with all aspects of his game.
