Houston Open: On Sunday, Tony Finau easily won the Cadence Bank Houston Open to record his third PGA Tour triumph of the year.
The American finished with a one-under 69 and won by four shots despite three bogeys that did not significantly damage his score.
Finau had previously had difficulty locating such consistency. In his first 185 tournaments on the PGA Tour, he only had one victory. He has won four of his previous 30 matches, including three this year.
Although I’ve always believed, Finau claimed that winning makes you more confident. “I’m beginning to put a full-package game together.”
Throughout the four days at Memorial Park, it most definitely showed.
Before the weather changed in the second round, Finau took the lead with a 62, and he was outstanding in his bogey-free round of 68 on Saturday in the chilly wind. On Sunday, nobody even came close to catching him.
He won to kick off the new season at 16-under 264, moving him up to No. 12 in the world rankings.
Tyson Alexander, a rookie on the PGA Tour, came in second. Alexander moved out of a tie for second place after sinking a 30-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to finish with a score of 66. He should almost certainly qualify for the postseason next summer because that was worth enough FedExCup points to do so.
I’ve had a great week, Alexander said. Tony should have taken the week off, in my opinion.
Ben Taylor of England missed a 25-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole for a score of 70 and came in third.
Finau held a sizable advantage going into this round. On the second hole, he made a 15-foot birdie putt to extend his lead over the competition.
He followed that by sinking a seven-foot birdie putt on the fifth hole, a 40-foot birdie putt on the par-five eighth, and a 20-foot birdie putt to finish the front nine.
He now had an eight-shot advantage, and the next challenge was to maintain balance.
Finau recalled the day as one in which he “battled and fought” but also “hit a lot of good putts that relaxed me.” “I have never been in this circumstance. I was quite nervous. I felt better all over as the round went on. Getting the W today made me happy.”
He didn’t bogey until the 10th hole, and on the back nine, he lost two more shots from a bunker and with a lengthy three-putt. The final round’s four-shot margin was the closest anyone ever came, though.
