At the International Crown LPGA team event in San Francisco, where the United States lost to Sweden in Pool A, but still made it to the semifinals, England placed last in their pool with just one win out of their six matches.
In the team match-play competition, the Americans (3-2-1) lost one four-ball match before fighting back to tie Sweden (5-0-1) in the second match. This resulted in the Americans securing a spot in the semifinals after China fell to England.
In the Sunday semifinals, the US will take on Pool B champion Thailand, while Sweden will play Australia, which finished in second place and was the only team to go unbeaten in pool play (6-0-0).
After Thailand defeated Australia on Saturday, Lexi Thompson will now face Thai opposition on Sunday morning when she will face Atthaya Thitikul.
After Patty Tavatanakit takes on Lilia Vu, Moriya and Ariya Jutanugarn of Thailand take on Danielle Kang and Nelly Korda.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the International Crown is being played for the first time since 2018. The top eight nations in women’s golf were chosen based on the Rolex Rankings from the previous year, and each nation sent four of its best players to the distinctive team competition.
Sunday morning will see the first of two semi-final matchups, which will each feature two singles matches and one foursome (alternate-shot) match. The semi-final format will be used for the final match, which will take place on Sunday afternoon.
Nordqvist remarked, “You knew it was going to have to be a really strong play, and I think (we’re) simply happy of ourselves. To build some momentum, we finished really strong yesterday, and we came out firing pretty strong this morning.”
In the second match, the American pair of Thompson and Kang led after three consecutive birdies, but Maja Stark sank a birdie putt on the last green to even the score.
Stark said of her birdie putt on hole 18: “I kind of liked it because it felt like they got mad, and that’s kind of funny. I simply wanted to make that putt so badly. I’ve never really felt the need to just perform under pressure like that since everything has always just been about me before, but now I do it for my team and for Sweden. It’s incredibly fantastic to be able to make a big difference towards the very end.”
In other Saturday action, South Korea defeated Japan in both games, while England and China were tied.
