Italian Open: At Marco Simone Golf & Country Club, Romain Langasque recorded a course-record 62 to take a one-shot lead over fellow Frenchman Julien Guerrier going into the Italian Open’s final round.
Seven birdies in the first 15 holes helped Langasque erase a seven-shot deficit he had before the day started.
The best was still to come as he hit one of the shots of the day on the par-4 16th hole, driving the green and then sinking his eagle putt to get to 11 under.
Guerrier eventually caught up to him at the top, shooting a third-round 66 with eight birdies and three bogeys to get to 12 under.
After his Saturday 66, Ryder Cup contender Adrian Meronk tied Langasque for second place.
Langasque sent his approach at first to about two feet before tapping in for an initial birdie.
After making back-to-back gains at the fifth and sixth holes, the 27-year-old maintained his card spotless with momentum-boosting par saves at the second and third holes.
Another close-range birdie helped him conclude the front nine, and he added more strikes on holes 11 and 12 to get to eight under.
Before driving the 16th green and sinking his eagle putt to move to 11 under, Langasque shared the lead after making a birdie from eight feet on the 15th hole.
Given how difficult this course is, he stated, “I did not expect nine under, and I certainly did not expect to shoot a very low score.”
“I am overjoyed about the score because I wasn’t expecting it.
“Sunday is going to be a big battle because there are so many good guys out there,” said the speaker.
Guerrier, who is trying to win his first DP World Tour Championship on Sunday, claimed the overall lead with a last birdie after climbing out of a bunker on the 18th green.
He said: “Of course we will speak and I hope we are going to have a good game.” He will play with his pal Langasque in the last group in round four.”
