PGA Tour: After the first round of the Wells Fargo Championship, where Rory McIlroy was one of the players to stand out, Tommy Fleetwood made birdies on his final two holes to take a one-shot lead.
A bogey-free 65 from Fleetwood at Quail Hollow put him on six under and pushed him ahead of a five-way tie for second that also included Xander Schauffele.
The Englishman started the round with six straight pars before taking advantage of the next driveable par four to reach the turn in 32 after making an eight-foot eagle at the par-five seventh.

With a brilliant approach shot from a fairway bunker at the par-four last, Fleetwood rolled in a 20-foot birdie at the 14th and holed from 12 feet at the par-three 17th, setting up an eight-foot birdie to take the lead.
“I just have to keep going and wait for those really big results and hopefully start contending again up at the top of the leaderboard,” said Fleetwood, who is still seeking his first PGA Tour triumph. We’ll take it from there and see what we can do.
When Schauffele made two bogeys in his final three holes, he lost the lead and is now tied for second place with K.H. Lee, Talor Moore, Kevin Streelman, and Ryan Palmer. Patrick Cantlay, who has Tiger Woods’ former caddie Joe LaCava on his bag, is one of nine players who are tied for seventh place on four under.
When McIlroy returns to action, he impresses.
McIlroy, who is competing for the first time since failing to make the cut at The Masters, celebrated his 34th birthday by shooting 34 on each of his first nine holes on route to a round of 68, which put him three strokes off the lead.
The Northern Irishman started the day with a birdie at the par-five 10th, then added another at the par-four 14th, and finally, after seeing his tee shot strike playing partner Matt Fitzpatrick’s ball, birdied the par-three fourth.
McIlroy made his lone mistake of the day on his drive at the par-five seventh, and he finished his round with a 10-foot birdie at the ninth to put himself among the 24 players who are within three shots of the early lead.
