LIV Golf Tulsa: In order to defeat Cameron Smith and Branden Grace and win the maiden LIV Tulsa championship in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Dustin Johnson overcame a triple-bogey before birdying the first hole of the play-off.
Johnson’s second victory since signing up with LIV Golf a year ago took some clutch shots on the last hole at soggy Cedar Ridge.
Johnson, who finished in a tie for third place with a three-under 67, was one stroke behind Smith (61) and Grace (65) when he drove the 18th hole into the left rough, partially obstructed by a tree. But he followed it with a sand wedge shot over the tree’s corner to a distance of around 12 feet, making the birdie.
Smith was waiting on the driving range after birdying the 18th to tie Grace’s LIV record of 61, which he had previously achieved in the first round.
Grace made a two-putt on the last hole from 35 feet, advancing him to the playoff and giving his South African side, Stinger, their first team victory of the year.
All three competitors were nearly on the same line throughout the playoff, with Grace putting from the perimeter. Smith missed from 12 feet to the right of the hole, Grace missed to the left, and Johnson holed his putt from 15 feet.
Johnson botching up the par-three 10th hole gave all of this opportunity to happen. He encountered a muddy lie, had a shot bounce into the water, and missed a four-foot putt. It resulted in a triple-bogey, giving Grace the advantage.
“Everything I could do wrong, I did wrong on the hole,” Johnson remarked. “I’m really happy with that the golfer said. To fight back and birdie 18 two times in a row when I had to.”
He was similarly pleased to have a positive outcome going into the year’s second major. At Oak Hill, the PGA Championship gets underway on Thursday.
Johnson has never finished within five strokes of the victor in any of the five LIV Golf competitions before to Sunday. He never had an impact on The Masters. He now believes that his strategy is set.
Johnson stated, “I’m really playing great.”
After winning two straight LIV Golf events, Talor Gooch competed in Oklahoma before a home audience and tied for 36th place.
Lee Westwood withdrew prior to the decisive round, citing a left leg injury sustained after a protracted treadmill run. He won’t be competing in the PGA Championship the next week but anticipates being prepared for the following LIV competition at Trump National outside of Washington.
