US Women’s Open: Michelle Wie West has been thinking on her time in the limelight as she prepares for her final event, the US Women’s Open, which takes place this week.
“I think there’s only one word that comes to mind: bold,” she explained on Tuesday. “Throughout my career, I’ve made a lot of risky decisions, and I’m proud of it. I’m proud of myself for being brave and doing what seemed right at times.
“I hope to inspire many other girls to make bold and fearless career decisions and choices as well.”
Wie West went to Stanford and won her first LPGA tournament at the age of 20 in 2009, but her expected superstardom never materialised.
She won her first and only major at the 2014 US Women’s Open, which she celebrated on Monday night with other champions.
During the event, Wie West had a greater appreciation for those who paved the way for today’s women’s golf pros.
“Every interaction with the older generation reminds you that we all have jobs because of them,” Wie West said. “Because they founded the Tour, because of the women who came before us, and because of all the hard work and things they did to improve the Tour.”
“It’s a big reason why our purse is now $2m this year, and it’s incredible to hear their stories.”
In terms of day-to-day living, Wie West identified her “competitive drive” as one of the most challenging attributes to harness.
“When you’re a professional athlete, the highs are so high, and the lows are so low,” she explained. “Honestly, I haven’t felt the highs of high in the last year, but I also haven’t felt the lows of low.”
The great golfer, now 33, is married to the son of an icon. Jonnie West, Jerry’s son (and rumoured model for the league’s emblem), and Wie West married in August 2019 and have a daughter, Makenna.
