PGA Tour: On his way to taking a two-shot lead after the first round of The American Express, where Jon Rahm also played well, Davis Thompson recorded back-to-back eagles.
Thompson shot a bogey-free 62 at La Quinta Country Club, one of three courses utilised during the PGA Tour competition, after making three birdies in his opening four holes.
During a low-scoring first day, the 23-year-old also birdied the ninth, thirteenth, and eighteenth holes. Rahm is one of five players who are tied for second after combining nine birdies with one bogey on the same course.
Thompson stated, “I got off to a hot start and just kind of coasted on my way in.” “Seeing some putts go in early is always encouraging and gives you the confidence to simply keep it going,”
At La Quinta, Taylor Montgomery and Jon Rahm both shot 64 in the first round. Sam Burns and Matti Schmid, a player from Germany, also shot 64 at PGA West’s Stadium Course. Tyler Duncan also shot 64 at PGA West’s Nicklaus Tournament Course.
Rahm made birdies on his first two holes and three in a row starting at the fifth. The Spaniard then made birdies on his next three holes, recovering a stroke on the penultimate hole, to make up for a failed up-and-down from off the tenth green.
The tournament is off to a fantastic start, according to Rahm. “On this golf course, you can’t truly win, but you can definitely lose the race. It’s off to a tremendous start with a strong round of golf and outstanding putting. I’m hoping to maintain that throughout the week and feel a little bit better from tee to green.”
Olympic gold medalist Xander Schauffele is one of nine players at seven under after shooting 65 in the opening round at La Quinta. Sungjae Im and Dean Burmester of South Africa are two more players who are three shots behind Schauffele.
Former major champion Jason Day is in the group five back, while world No. 2 Scottie Scheffler is six back after starting with a bogey-free 68 at La Quinta. Justin Rose and Russell Knox of Scotland are both four shots adrift.
