As the Porsche European Open enters its last round, six players are tied for the lead, including England’s Jordan Smith, who is attempting to win the competition for a second time.
The Englishman finished his third round with a 72, placing him at the top of the leaderboard on Saturday along with Julien Guerrier, David Law, Tom McKibbin, Alexander Bjork, and David Law.
“I’m proud of how I persevered and kept things moving. Making a couple of birdies on the approach was fantastic,” according to two-time DP World Tour champion Smith.
“My week has been enjoyable thus far. I haven’t been lying on my back much. So tomorrow will be more of the same.
“Everyone would claim victory would mean everything, but it really would. Gaining my third victory would be wonderful, and it would be good to do it in front of my wife.”
Scotland’s Law finished his round of 72 on Saturday with back-to-back birdies to tie for the lead, while Northern Ireland’s McKibbin completed his game with a birdie after an eventful front nine.
The competition in the final round excites Rory McIlroy’s other golf clubmate, twenty-year-old Challenge Tour alumnus McKibbin.
“I’m excited,” McKibbin declared. “I am looking forward to playing golf outside.
“Let’s just see where we end up at the end of the day, one hole at a time,” the player said.
“It would mean the world to me to win. I’ll just make an effort not to consider it while I go about my day and play my own game, then assess where I am at the conclusion of tomorrow.”
Law, going for a second championship, said: “This tournament has been incredible. Today’s crowds were fantastic.”
Guerrier started the day six strokes off the lead but quickly caught up after a bogey on the sixth hole by making five birdies in the following six holes.
The Frenchman lost another stroke on the 13th hole but recovered to record a 67 and put himself in a good position as he goes for his first DP World Tour victory on Sunday. He also finished his round with gains at the 15th, 16th, and 18th holes.
Dane Axelsen shot four birdies in his final six holes, while Sweden’s Bjork finished with a birdie-eagle.
