Presidents Cup: Among Davis Love III’s six captain’s picks to represent Team USA in this month’s President Cup at Quail Hollow are Jordan Spieth and Collin Morikawa.
Spieth, who missed out on playing for Tiger Woods’ team in Team USA’s close 16-14 triumph in Melbourne in 2019, makes his fourth appearance in the biannual competition and his first since 2017.
The 12-man team, with an average age of just 29.6 years old, is the youngest Team USA in Presidents Cup history, including the former world No. 1, who placed seventh in the qualification rankings.
“This will be Jordan’s fourth Presidents Cup appearance, which makes him easily the veteran member of a young team,” Love said. “He is mature beyond his years and will serve as a great mentor to some of our rookies, while also being one of the top players we’ll count on to play well at Quail Hollow.”
Along with Max Homa, reigning BMW PGA Champion Billy Horschel, and Cameron Young, Morikawa is one of four captain’s picks making their Presidents Cup debuts. Kevin Kisner, who made his Team USA debut in 2017 and went unbeaten, will make his second appearance.
Following the end of the BMW Championship last Monday, it was confirmed that Scottie Scheffler, the world No. 1 and Masters champion, was one of the six automatic qualifiers. Team USA’s lineup also included Patrick Cantlay, Xander Schauffele, Sam Burns, Justin Thomas, and Tony Finau.
With six players making their Presidents Cup debuts, only Spieth and Thomas have played in numerous competitions for Team USA. Eight rookies make up the International Team’s lineup; several of their former players are ineligible to play because they switched to LIV Golf this year.
Two qualifiers, Cameron Smith and Joaquin Niemann, forfeited their spots by joining the breakaway circuit, resulting in two more captain’s picks. The other players that qualified automatically were Hideki Matsuyama and Adam Scott, as well as Mito Pereira of Chile, Joohyung (Tom) Kim of South Korea, and Corey Conners of Canada. up.
Trevor Immelman, the captain of the International Team, then made his captain’s picks, including South African Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Australian Cam Davis, South Koreans Si Woo Kim and K.H. Lee, Colombian Sebastian Muoz, and Canadian Taylor Pendrith.
The United States’ Team USA is the current winner and has won the last eight Presidents Cups since 2005.
