Presidents Cup: Despite the International Team narrowing the advantage to four points going into the Sunday singles, Team USA is still on track to win the Presidents Cup for the ninth time in a row.
At Quail Hollow, the pre-tournament favourites went into the weekend with an advantage of 8-2 and kept it after sharing the winnings in the morning foursomes.
Eight rookies on the International Team went on to win three of the four matches during a strong performance in the fourballs, cutting Team USA’s lead to 11-7 going into the final day.
“This morning on the bus I challenged these guys to win the day and they did, 5-3,” International Team captain Trevor Immelman said. “Now, we’ve got a very long way to go. We’re still four points behind and we know how tough the Americans are in singles, but today was a great day for us – this team has been through a lot.”
The International Team needs 8.5 points from the 12 matches on Sunday to win the Presidents Cup in an improbable victory and a first for this century, whereas Davis Love III’s American team needs just 4.5 points from the 12 matches to extend their winning streak.
“We’ve got to turnaround tomorrow and come out like the first two days,” Love said. “I don’t like being four ahead, I liked it when we were six ahead, but we’re in a good spot. We’ve got a bunch of guys hitting it really good, they just made more putts today than we did.”
