RBC Heritage: Following his decision to skip the RBC Heritage last month in order to concentrate on his mental health, Rory McIlroy claims he is now in a “better headspace.”
The Northern Irishman had a disappointing week at The Masters and missed the cut after arriving at Augusta National under pressure to win a coveted fifth major title.
Following the emergence of the independent LIV Tour over the past year, his pursuit of the Grand Slam had been accompanied by the results of establishing himself as a leading voice in laying out a sustainable future for golf.
McIlroy then made the choice to skip South Carolina, which cost him $3 million because it was his second missed designated tournament of the year.
It was wonderful to just try to disconnect and get away from it, McIlroy said the Golf Channel. “Obviously after the disappointment of Augusta, and it’s been a pretty taxing 12 months mentally, so it was nice to just try to get away from it.”
“It’s wonderful to be back and feel rested, and I think we’re going to have a really busy stretch from here until the Playoffs, so I’m eager to get started.
“I think I’m in a better frame of mind than I was. That run-up to Augusta is always a stressful few weeks making sure everything is in order and your game is in good shape.”
In the ongoing and, at times, contentious debate over the effects of LIV, McIlroy has established himself as the leading voice of PGA Tour members.
The 33-year-old is back in action this week as he competes in his first tournament since Augusta at the Wells Fargo Championship.
There are still three major tournaments left this year, so there is still a lot to play for, the golfer said. “I think for me it was a nice reset,” he added.
“I needed to put the previous 12 months in the past and concentrate on the future. I believe that the past three weeks have given me that perspective and helped me go back on the correct path.”
