LIV Golf: In order to bring in an “adult” to help break the “stalemate” in the argument between golf’s tours, Rory McIlroy has called on Greg Norman to resign from his position at LIV Golf.
In their legal dispute with the Saudi-funded breakaway circuit, McIlroy has been a staunch backer of golf’s existing tours. The world No. 1 believes that for there to be any resolution inside the sport, chief executive Norman may have to leave LIV Golf.
In the event that those two lawsuits continue, nothing will happen, McIlroy declared prior to the DP World Tour Championship. “Your options are constrained. Then, I believe that whatever results from those two events, there are a couple of things that I would like to see take place on the LIV side.
“I believe Greg has to leave. He simply needs to leave the stage, in my opinion. Despite the fact that he has left his mark, I believe that this is the appropriate time to sort of say, “Look, you’ve got this thing off the ground, but no one is going to talk unless there’s an adult in the room who can actually try to mend fences.”
“Things could happen if those two things take place. But since there is no other option, the situation is currently impasse. Who knows, maybe something will happen.
“No one really knows if that will be decided by a judge or a court, or if anything else will occur along the line. But it appears to be at a standstill at the moment.
“Tiger shouldn’t be appreciative to anybody”
In a previous interview, Norman singled out McIlroy and Tiger Woods, saying that “every PGA Tour player should be thanking LIV” for the Player Impact Program [PIP] and prize money increases. However, McIlroy rejected the notion that players like him and Woods should be appreciative of the rival tour.
“Am I grateful that it has given the top players more opportunities to make more?” McIlroy asked. Yes. But in the end, would that make me happier after my job is over? No.
I’ve said it a million times, but Tiger is the reason we play for as much as we do in golf. I’m very grateful to everyone in the sport.
“Tiger is the reason our game has the prominence it does. Both Tiger’s generation and the generation that follows it has benefited from him, his accomplishments, and what he has done for golf.
Tiger shouldn’t owe anyone anything, in my opinion. I believe that everyone else in the game ought to be grateful.
