Ryder Cup: Zach Johnson believes LIV Golf players are “technically” allowed to compete for the US Ryder Cup squad.
Despite the recent mending of ties between the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and LIV Golf, players from the Saudi circuit have only been able to collect qualifying points at major tournaments.
LIV players who have been suspended indefinitely by the PGA and DP World Tour will be eligible to reapply for membership beginning with the 2023 season.
The 2023 Ryder Cup will be broadcast from September 29 to October 1 in Rome.
“What’s going on in professional golf on a competitive level, competition level, is the PGA Tour; right?” Johnson said.
“This isn’t the PGA of America. Individuals who are Americans and play on tours other than the PGA Tour might potentially play on the Latin Tour, the Asian Tour, or any place.
“Most of the time, they’ll be PGA of America members for a variety of reasons. Our liability insurance is the best, and we also have some additional bonuses.”
Although he did not explicitly state that LIV Golf members were welcome on Team USA, Johnson made it plain that nothing stood in their way of making the team.
“These guys who left the PGA Tour with status and went to play on that other tour, the LIV Tour, they’re still members of the PGA of America, so they can still get points,” Johnson explained. “As a result, they can compete in the PGA Championship because that’s how the PGA of America operates. Technically, they can still be a member of Team USA.”
Johnson believes Koepka has a ‘really strong chance’ of making the team.
Rory McIlroy has endorsed Brooks Koepka, who is rated 12th on the Official World Golf Ranking and won the 2023 PGA Championship after being tied for second at the Masters.
Johnson has revealed that Koepka is a player he is keeping an eye on for potential selection.
