Saudi International Championship: Abraham Ancer believes he found something late in that second round at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic on the DP World Tour even though he missed the cut last week.
Ancer said, “That day, I felt pretty good.” Just this past week, I brought it here.”
Ancer triumphed over Cameron Young by two shots to win the PIF Saudi International on the Asian Tour on Sunday, turning those emotions into a trophy.
After 54 holes, Ancer, who hadn’t won since the 2021 WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational, held a one-shot lead over Young, who was five shots ahead of the next-closest player.
Ancer stated, “I kept telling myself, just picture if I were in, like, 20th and simply had to go out there and shoot a low one.”
Young tied Ancer after shooting four birdies in his opening seven holes, but Ancer took the lead again with a birdie at the par-3 eighth hole.
Ancer praised the putt and added, “That was huge.” “I didn’t hit a few decent tee balls in the middle of that front nine. One turned sharply to the right, while the other turned briefly to the left. It’s not very good when you hit it short and crooked out here. But I was incredibly good at scrambling. After making a few poor second shots, I made some pretty fantastic chip shots. This was a big deal. Making that putt on 8 was a huge round accomplishment. He is a terrific player, so it definitely benefited me. He strikes the golf ball hard and executes every move flawlessly.
“So I knew I had to maintain my composure. I was unable to make any mistakes, and maybe it turned out okay.”
Ancer made just two errors the entire week, according to his scorecard.
Young, who birdied two of his final three holes despite suffering a costly double bogey at the par-4 15th, remarked, “With the wind blowing as hard as it did, that’s, one, incredible control of your golf ball, and two, I think just a lot of mental toughness.”
Young and Ancer both shot 2-under 68s to tie for first place at 19 under after Ancer parred every hole on the back nine. Paul Casey and Sadom Kaewkanjana (both at 14 under) were next, with Lucas Herbert (at 15 under) in third place (13 under).
