The Masters: Rory McIlroy was pleased with the manner he fought back late to win the Masters and record a career-best result at Augusta National.
Following back-to-back 73s on the first two days, McIlroy’s chances of completing the career Grand Slam were practically finished, with the four-time major champion still 10 shots behind leader Scottie Scheffler after a third-round 71.
The former world No. 1 shot to the top of the scoreboard with an eagle three at the par-five 13th hole, bringing him to seven-under for the round, and a remarkable bunker hole-out at the 18th ensuring a round-of-the-day 64.
“I gave it a great go, and I can’t ask any more of myself,” McIlroy said. “I went out there today, shot my best ever score at Augusta and it’s going to be my best finish ever. Probably not quite good enough, but I’ll come back next year and keep trying.”
The Northern Irishman got off to a fantastic start on the final day with an opening-hole eagle and drove the par-four third green on his way to picking up another stroke, and he reached the turn in 32 after back-to-back birdies from the seventh.
McIlroy started his back nine with a birdie and rolled in a ten-foot eagle on the par-five 13th, bringing him to seven-under for the round and boosting the potential of the first ’62 round’ in Masters history.
Any hopes of a record-low score were dashed when his drive found the trees on the par-five 15th hole, leaving him to lay up and settle for a par. However, his stunning birdie on the 72nd hole capped off a bogey-free final day in style, putting him seven under for the clubhouse target.
McIlroy continued, “You dream about getting yourself in a position [major contention].” “I didn’t think I was close enough to the lead.” Scottie Scheffler is doing a fantastic job. I mean, to play as good as I did today and then finish like this, it’s just unbelievable.
“This tournament never ceases to amaze. Yeah, that’s as happy as I’ve ever been on a golf course right there. Just having a chance, and then with Collin (Morikawa), we both played so well all day, and for both of us to finish like this, I was just so happy for him too.”
McIlroy’s performance at Augusta National is his best in 14 attempts, surpassing his fourth-place result in 2015, and his solid week is his best in a major since tying for second at The Open in 2018.
