US Women’s Open: Amy Olson swears she will enjoy every minute of her US Women’s Open appearance at Pebble Beach this week, despite the fact that she is seven months pregnant.
Due to her limited playing status, Olson has only made three LPGA Tour appearances this season, placing tied-61st at the Lotte Championship in April before missing cuts at the Shoprite LPGA Classic and Meijer LPGA Classic last month.
Those early exits followed a spectacular performance at a 36-hole US Open Women’s qualifying earlier in May, when she posted rounds of 72 and 66 to win by two shots at Somerset Country Club in Mendota Heights, Minnesota.
Olson was nearly six months pregnant at the time of the qualifying tournament, and the American, who revealed her pregnancy on social media in March, sought advice from other LPGA Tour mothers before deciding whether to compete for a major.
“I started texting like every mother on the PGA Tour, ‘how long did you play? ‘When did you decide to call it quits?’ And I was hearing [that] the maximum is anywhere between 28 and 32 weeks, depending on how you carry and who you are,” Olson told the LPGA Tour website.
“I calculated that when I compete in the [US Women’s Open], I will have just completed 30 weeks. ‘Okay, it’s conceivable,’ I think. I’m heard it’s possible. Pebble [Beach] of all places. So I thought, ‘You know what, let’s just go out there and see what happens’.”
Olson has twice finished runner-up in majors, in the 2018 Evian Championship and this tournament in 2020, although she has lower expectations for her sixth US Women’s Open appearance.
Korda is inspired by video games!
Nelly Korda is excited to play Pebble Beach’s famed par-three seventh hole, which she had previously only played on a video game console before this week!
In her pre-tournament news conference, Korda said that she and her brother Sebastian Korda, a professional tennis player, will take on the hole while playing EA Sports’ ‘Tiger Woods PGA Tour’ game.
“We used to always play Pebble, and my favourite hole on that game was always [hole No] seven,” Korda recalled, having almost made a hole-in-one during Monday’s practise session.
