Boxing Fight: Although Molly McCann’s next UFC fight has been scheduled for London in July, she still hopes for a stirring homecoming match to take place in Liverpool in the future.
On July 22 at UFC London, McCann will fight Julija Stoliarenko in his comeback bout.
Seven months after losing by submission to rising American star Erin Blanchfield, McCann is hoping to regain title contention in this fight.
Only four months have passed since the UFC’s last visit to the city when Leon Edwards successfully defended his welterweight title against Kamaru Usman at UFC 286 in London.
On what is anticipated to be a loaded bill, McCann’s bout has been confirmed first. The Birmingham champion plans to return to the cage around the end of this year.
The 32-year-old does, however, acknowledge that she and fellow Merseysider Paddy Pimblett have been attempting to convince the UFC to hold an event in Liverpool.
“I feel like the UFC only wants us to be in bigger venues,” she remarked. “We have pitched it over and over again. We would much sooner fight at the M&S Bank Arena than anywhere else in the world, but they’re just not having it.”
In order to win again against Stoliarenko, “Meatball” will try to do so spectacularly, as she did in her previous two fights in London, where she knocked out both Hannah Goldy and Luana Carolina with vicious elbows to win “Performance of the Night” on both occasions.
McCann’s three-fight winning run during a meteoric 2022 came to an end when she was defeated by Blanchfield in the opening round. Since the way she lost required time away from the sport, this will be her longest hiatus since 2019. She plans to return in the summer.
Pimblett, a fellow Liverpudlian and a training partner at Next Generation MMA might not make the London card this summer because he is still recovering from ankle surgery and has been using crutches for more than six weeks.
During his contentious unanimous decision victory over Jared Gordon at UFC 282 late last year, which increased his winning run to six, Pimblett injured ankle ligaments.
Despite the controversy surrounding that choice, McCann is convinced that she and Pimblett are destined for success and that Liverpool is not only behind them but actively participating in their quest.
