Miami Open: After losing to Dusan Lajovic in straight sets in the opening round of the Miami Open, Andy Murray joined fellow Brit Emma Raducanu in exiting the tournament.
A few hours earlier, Raducanu had been ousted from the women’s competition after losing to Bianca Andreescu in three sets. The 35-year-old went on to lose to his Serb opponent by scores of 6-4, 7-5.
Murray was hoping to get back on track after losing to Jack Draper in the third round at Indian Wells the previous week, but he stumbled against the world No. 76, who won in just under 90 minutes.
Worldwide 52 in the first set, Murray missed break-point opportunities and was eventually broken himself, falling behind 4-3 before Lajovic finished off the set in 42 minutes.
Lajovic served to end the match at 5-4 in the second set, but Murray broke back. The Scot then dropped his subsequent service game, and his opponent went on to secure his first victory on a hard court in 2023.
After the loss, Murray observed, “Some days you obviously don’t hit the ball your best.” I served fairly well, but the remainder of the match was a little difficult.
“I made a number of mistakes that I would never have expected to make. My ability to move well was lacking, which is really significant to me.
“Even based on the previous few days, I wasn’t anticipating playing like that because I’ve been doing okay in practice.
“Naturally, I expected to perform much better here. I’m not sure if I’ll stay and train on the clay here for a few days before leaving for Spain.”
Murray, the 2009 and 2013 winner of this competition, would have anticipated playing the new world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz in the third round in Miami, but Lajovic may now get that opportunity if he defeats Maxime Cressy and Alcaraz triumphs over Facundo Bagnis.
In his first match since the Australian Open, Kyle Edmund was defeated by Wu Yibing 7-5, 7-5, bringing an early stop to his tournament as well.
