Miami Open: Jannik Sinner defeated Carlos Alcaraz in the Miami Open semifinals, and on Monday, Novak Djokovic will take Carlos Alcaraz’s place as the world’s top player; Sinner defeats Alcaraz in the Indian Wells final and will now face Daniil Medvedev; Medvedev defeats Karen Khachanov, a fellow Russian
After losing to Jannik Sinner in the Miami Open semifinals, current No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz will drop to No. 2 on Monday, giving way to Novak Djokovic.
He overcame Alcaraz 6-7 6-4 6-2, the opponent he had defeated in the Indian Wells semifinals earlier this month on his way to winning that competition in California and taking the top spot in the rankings.
He will now compete against Daniil Medvedev, who defeated fellow Russian Karen Khachanov 7-6 3-6 6-3 to go to his fifth straight ATP final, becoming the first person to do so since Ivan Lendl in 1981.
“When I play against Jannik, I sense something different about the spectators,” Alcaraz told the press. Because I find the match to be lovely to watch, I believe that the entire globe is probably watching it.
To maintain his lead over Djokovic, who has skipped the American swing due to his immunisation status, the Spaniard needed to convincingly defend his Miami Open title.
“I don’t think about that I lost the number one, I lost the Sunshine Double,” Alcaraz continued.
“Although it’s regrettable, I believe I will still have time to strive to obtain it in the future (win Indian Wells and Miami back to back). Yet, all I can concentrate on is raising my game so I can defeat Jannik.”
Djokovic hasn’t played tennis in the US since 2021, but after the Senate voted to eliminate Covid-19 measures, he will be eligible to compete at the US Open in August and September.
Officials turned down the 35-year-request olds for special clearance to play at Indian Wells and Miami this year.
