Indian Wells: Emma Raducanu defeated Beatriz Haddad Maia, the 13th seed, 6-1 2-6 6-4 on Monday to go to the fourth round of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.
The British No. 1 got out to a good start, breaking twice, and quickly won the first set in 34 minutes. However, after dropping her serve twice and double-faulting four times, the Brazilian levelled the match by winning the second set 6-2.
The world no. 77 then played some outstanding tennis to break in the seventh game after Raducanu survived a break point to keep the score at 2-2 in the decider.
Haddad Maia forced her to serve the game out when she created two more break opportunities, which the 2021 US Open winner deservedly converted.

In the round of 16, Raducanu will now take against either Iga Swiatek, the current champion and world No. 1, or Bianca Andreescu.
Only once, and it was on clay, has Raducanu faced Swiatek on the tour; he lost that match 6-4, 6-4, in Stuttgart in April. The two also faced off in the 2018 Wimbledon Juniors quarterfinals, with the Pole coming out on top again.
When she trailed the Canadian in the second set against the 32nd seed Andrescu in Rome last year, she was forced to retire from the match.
Raducanu: After a lack of practice, progress has been “quite astonishing”
Due to the recurrence of a wrist issue that plagued her last season, Raducanu’s participation in the tournament was in doubt. She had lost to Coco Gauff in the second round of the Australian Open in January.
Prior to competing at Indian Wells, the 20-year-old withdrew from a competition in Texas and an exhibition tournament. In the first round, she defeated Danka Kovinic 6-2, 6-3, and in the second round, she defeated Polish 20th seed Magda Linette 7-6 (7-3), 6-2.
In his post-match interview with Amazon Prime, Raducanu said, “I am incredibly delighted with the way I battled and persevered in the third set.”
“I lowered my effort a little in the second set and, against such a strong opponent as Beatriz, it was enough, and before you knew it, the set was over at 6-2. I was thus quite pleased with how I had been able to regain my intensity and attention in the third.
“To come out and play at this level and be competitive is a positive sign for me, the player said. For me, it’s quite incredible. I haven’t really prepared for this event or practised.”
