Indian Wells: When it comes to Indian Wells and Miami in March, Novak Djokovic is hoping for a “good choice” as he approaches Steffi Graf for the record for the most weeks at the top of the rankings.
The Serbian recently requested a “special permit” to enter the US in order to compete in the forthcoming Masters 1000 tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami; however, visitors who have not received the required vaccinations are still prohibited from entering the US until mid-May.
Djokovic said he had a “huge ambition” to compete at the “Sunshine Double,” which he last won in 2016, to the Serbian press in Belgrade after winning a record-extending 10th Australian Open championship last month to tie his great adversary Rafael Nadal on 22 Grand Slam triumphs.
Everything is in motion, and I appreciate Indian Wells and Miami for publicly supporting me and wanting me to be able to play, he said.
“I’m really grateful for it because I really want to play because I haven’t played there in a while. I’m hoping a decision will be made in my favour soon.
“All I can say is that it’s not in my hands.”
After it was discovered that Djokovic played with a three-centimetre (1.2 inches) tear in his hamstring during his run, his Grand Slam success in Australia came at a price.
The 35-year-old had to dismiss concerns about an injury throughout the Melbourne tournament, but he now seems fit and well and said he will make his ATP circuit comeback in Dubai the following week.
After winning in Melbourne, Novak Djokovic overtook Carlos Alcaraz to take the top spot in the ATP rankings, but Alcaraz is now only 590 points behind after winning the Argentina Open last week.
Djokovic has already surpassed Roger Federer’s record of 310 weeks as the men’s No. 1, and when he reaches his 378th week at the top on Monday, he will almost probably beat Steffi Graf, who has won 22 major titles.
“Steffi Graf is among the greatest living legends of tennis, both for men’s and women’s teams,” according to Djokovic. I have the utmost regard and admiration for her.
