Australian Open: Daniil Medvedev defeated unseeded American Maxime Cressy in the Australian Open quarterfinals to set up a quarterfinal meeting with Felix Auger-Alissime and keep his Grand Slam hopes alive.
Cressy, a French-born American, plays a serve-and-volley style of tennis and has had a strong start to the season, reaching the final of the Melbourne Summer Set.
After losing the third set, Medvedev’s emotions threatened to boil over, but the US Open champion kept his cool and won 6-2 7-6 (7-4) 6-7 (4-7) 7-5.
“It wasn’t easy,” the second seed said. “I’d probably be in a worse mental state if I didn’t win the fourth one since I had so many breakpoints. It’s going to be a slugfest. The fourth set was really insane.”
As Cressy kept hitting the lines on key points, Medvedev ranting about how dull the match was and declaring it his unluckiest day ever, the Russian eventually took his ninth break point of the fourth set.
In three hours and 35 minutes on John Cain Arena, ninth seed Auger-Aliassime defeated 2018 runner-up Marin Cilic 2-6 7-6 (9-7) 6-2 7-6 (7-4) to reach his first quarter-final in Melbourne.
Auger-Aliassime, 21, joins compatriot Denis Shapovalov in the last eight, marking the first time in Grand Slam history that two Canadian men have advanced to the quarterfinals.

With a decisive victory over local hope Alex de Minaur on Monday, Italian Jannik Sinner advanced to the quarter-finals for the first time.
Sinner, who made the last eight in his first French Open appearance in 2020, overcame a difficult first set to triumph 7-6 (7-3) 6-3 6-4.
“I was serving well at initially, but he had more chances than me in the first set, so I tried to press a little bit harder after that,” Sinner remarked.
“In the previous several months, I’ve gathered a lot of experience and I believe I’ve evolved as a player and a person.”
Sinner will face fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, who beat Taylor Fritz 4-6 6-4 4-6 6-3 6-4 just after midnight after coming back from a set down twice.
Fritz, an American who was playing in his first Grand Slam fourth round encounter, played well, but Tsitsipas came through when it counted most.
Tsitsipas, who will now compete in his seventh Grand Slam quarter-final, was taken aback after the match.
“All I can say is that it was a fantastic match,” he said on the court.
“On the court, I spilt everything. I’m quite proud of myself for the manner I fought and remained constant in the tense moments. I’m completely overwhelmed. The stadium was engulfed in flames. It appears to be too good to be true.”
In Melbourne, a British duo has advanced to the last eight
Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski advanced to the men’s doubles quarterfinals.
After winning the title in 2020 and placing second last year, Salisbury is aiming for a third straight final with American partner Rajeev Ram.
They’ve had no trouble so far, winning 6-4 6-4 in the third round against Australian wild cards Dane Sweeny and Li Tu.
