Australian Open: After competing in the Grand Slam competition for the first time 25 years ago, Venus Williams has been given a wild card entrance to participate at the Australian Open the following month.
Williams, 42, lost to her younger sister, Serena, in the 2017 title match after making it to the final twice in Australia. For the 22nd time, she will compete in the season-opening major.
The seven-time major champion expressed his excitement in a statement, saying, “I am very excited to be returning to Melbourne to compete at the Australian Open in January.”
“I’ve been competing in the nation for more than 20 years, and the Australian community has always given me their unwavering support.
I’m looking forward to creating more memories at the event this year, and it will be an honour to play in front of the supporters once more.
Venus and Serena Williams won the Australian Open women’s doubles title four times in total. In 1998, Venus and fellow American Justin Gimelstob also won the mixed doubles crown.
Serena Williams will not compete in the Melbourne Park tournament from January 16 to 29 after declaring at the US Open that she was prepared to go on from tennis.
Venus is a terrific role model and a leader in our sport in many respects, according to Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley, in addition to being an amazing player and fan favourite.
We are thrilled to have her visit the AO again in January.
Williams joins a women’s draw with 12 major champions despite having just played four matches in 2022.
