Jehovah’s Witness: A lot of well-known athletes are JWs. While some of these sportsmen converted later in life, others were nurtured in the church. Two of the greatest female tennis players of all time are also Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Who is the most well-known Jehovah’s Witness athlete? Top of the list is Serena Williams. She was brought up as a Jehovah’s Witness and continues to be one now, along with her sister Venus.
I go to Kingdom Hall because I’ve been studying to become a Jehovah’s Witness, Serena explains. Since I was a young child, I have been a Witness, and what we teach is based on the Bible. The family where Danny Granger was raised was a Jehovah’s Witness one. Whether he still follows the faith today is unknown.
For those who don’t know, Jehovah’s Witnesses are a branch of Christianity with close to nine million followers.
The church forbids celebrating festivals like Easter, Christmas, birthdays, or any event having pagan origins in addition to rejecting the widely accepted Christian theology of the Holy Trinity, which holds that one God exists in three equal forms.
The former World No. 1 admitted that she wasn’t really a huge follower of the faith but that she wanted to “get back into it” in an interview with Vogue magazine back in 2015.
I value my Jehovah’s Witness status, but I haven’t really lived up to it despite wanting to, Williams admitted.
When her daughter Olympia turned one in 2018, Williams made it known that she wouldn’t be throwing a party. The 40-year-old chose to have a less formal “party,” complete with face painting and other amusements Olympia could partake in.
Williams remarked that birthdays are not observed in Olympia. We don’t do that because we’re Jehovah’s Witnesses, she said.
