Serena Williams rejoined the WTA Tour at Wimbledon this year after a 364-day absence. For the WTA Comeback Player of the Year award, she is a contender.
The 41-year-old participated in a match at Toronto’s All England Club, losing three of her first four games. The Arthur Ashe Stadium was packed for each match when Serena Williams competed in the 2022 US Open, which she declared would be her last tennis tournament.
She defeated Danka Kovinic before defeating Anett Kontaveit in a gruelling three-set match. Williams initially seemed like she might challenge for the title, but in the end, Ajla Tomljanovic defeated her in three sets after three hours and seven minutes.
She is 41 years old and has been gone for about a year, but she has shown a remarkable spirit of perseverance.
After dropping a few indications that she might come back after retirement, it will be interesting to watch if she is not nominated for the WTA Comeback Player of the Year award in 2023.
In 2004 and 2018, Williams won the award for Comeback Player of the Year. She won seven Player of the Year awards throughout her career, in addition to the 1998 Newcomer of the Year and the 1999 Most Improved Player awards.
She was nominated this year along with Daria Saville, Donna Vekic, and Tatjana Maria.
Serena Williams on her bond with tennis: “I’ll always have a relationship with tennis.”
Although Serena Williams stated that she was leaving tennis, she never used the word “retiring.” The American has already hinted at the possibility of playing once more.
Williams gave her followers cause for optimism when she described Tom Brady’s retirement U-Turn as a phenomenal trend. When she made an appearance at a subsequent event in San Francisco, the 41-year-old asserted that she was not retiring. Williams gave her supporters cause to think that the 23-time Grand Slam champion is really considering a comeback through the two events.
Williams was asked about her feelings towards tennis in her interview with Cosmopolitan. Williams confessed that she missed the sport but avoided answering the question directly.
“I will always be in a bond with tennis. I’m going to keep that open-ended, to be honest. It is. It is very important to who I am. I like performing it. I have a lot of fun competing. And you are constantly in love with your shortcomings. Already, I am missing it” Serena Williams said.
