US Open: Because to his vaccine restrictions, Novak Djokovic has not played tennis in the US since the 2021 US Open and was unable to compete in this year’s Miami Open and Indian Wells; on Wednesday, the US Senate approved abolishing Covid-19 restrictions.
With the Senate’s vote to repeal the Covid-19 restrictions, Novak Djokovic will be permitted to compete at the US Open this year.
Due to Covid regulations put in place by the government at the height of the pandemic, the former world No. 1 hasn’t played tennis in the US since losing the 2021 US Open final.
The 22-time Grand Slam champion has not had the immunisation, which is required for international visitors to the United States.
Covid-19 declarations, which were implemented on March 13, 2020, by then-President Donald Trump, would be abolished, according to a bill that the US Senate approved on Wednesday.
Joe Biden will now be given the opportunity to sign the legislation after it was approved by the House of Representatives earlier this year.
As a result of the vote, US government agencies will begin to reduce the Covid restrictions, allowing Djokovic to compete in the US Open.
Due to a lack of entry authorization into America, the 35-year-old missed the Flushing Meadows tournament last year as well as the Miami Open and Indian Wells.
His request to play in Miami and at Indian Wells was denied by officials despite his application for special permission to enter.
Three times—most recently in 2018—Djokovic has won the US Open championship, while six other times he has placed second.
Last year, after defeating Casper Ruud in four sets, Carlos Alcaraz won his first Grand Slam.
Djokovic told CNN earlier this month that he was eager to visit Flushing Meadows again this season.
He proclaimed, “I truly want to be playing there, want to be there.”
“I had probably one of the nicest experiences I’ve ever had with the New York audience in 2021 when I lost to Medvedev in the finals. I had the good fortune to play in many finals and win the championship three times.
“Even though I lost that match, I received a lot of love and admiration from the fans, and I want to return and rekindle that relationship. I hope that will happen because I am looking forward to it.”
