With her third triumph in four years at Roland Garros, the 22-year-old Pole reaffirmed her place as the finest female player in the world, particularly on clay, by defeating Karolina Muchova 6-2 5-7 6-4 after two hours and 46 minutes.
This was by far her most difficult Grand Slam final, with unseeded Czech Muchova fighting back from a set and 3-0 deficit to force a decider.
Muchova led by a break twice in that, but Swiatek refused to be defeated, finally triumphing before wailing on the ground.

Swiatek’s initial effort to raise the Coupe Suzanne Lenglen made a mistake when the lid slipped off and had to be rescued, but on the second try she hoisted it well above her head.
“First and foremost, congratulations to Karolina,” the Pole remarked. “I sincerely hope we have many more finals.” Sorry for being such a hassle to my team. I’ll try harder next time.
“I know we won this tournament, but being on tour for a couple of weeks without breaks is difficult.” I’m so glad we can be content and rejoice right now.”

She is the first woman to successfully defend her championship on the Paris clay since Justine Henin in 2007. She joins Naomi Osaka on four Grand Slam titles, with veteran Venus Williams holding the most with seven.
Muchova made a jittery start, and it thought Swiatek would have little opposition, but Muchova broke through in the fourth game, and the rest of the opening set was close.
The Czech showed off her versatility against Sabalenka, keeping the Australian Open winner on her toes with her court craft and willingness to come to the net, and she had some notable moments here.
There were simply too many unforced errors while Swiatek was able to maintain her preferred position in the centre of the baseline and command with her powerful forehand.
