Indian Wells: With a 7-6 (8-6) 6-2 victory at Indian Wells, Jack Draper stopped Andy Murray’s tournament and moved on to the round of 16.
Draper initially had trouble getting into a rhythm, but he managed to win a close first set after holding on to a set point at 5-6 and defeating Murray in a tie-break.
On Monday night, Murray showed symptoms of exhaustion as Draper won the final four games to secure a remarkable triumph.
“When I was very little, Andy has been someone I’ve admired,” Draper remarked.
“I first saw him win Wimbledon in 2013, and since then, I’ve had the chance to get to know him and train with him frequently.
“It was an honour to play against him on this court. He’s a really wonderful person, a tremendous champion, and a terrific human being.”
After defeating Dan Evans in straight sets in the second round at Indian Wells, the outcome means that Draper has now eliminated two other British players.
In the round of 16, Draper will play No. 1 seed Carlos Alcaraz, who defeated Tallon Griekspoor in straight sets. This will be a challenging contest.
Murray has not won three straight matches at a Masters 1000 competition since he won the title in Paris in 2016. He defeated Radu Albot and Tomas Martn Etcheverry in the early stages.
Wawrinka goes back in time
Defending champion Taylor Fritz defeated Sebastian Baez with ease, winning 6-1, 6-2, and Stan Wawrinka defeated No. 7 seed Holger Rune with a comeback victory, winning 2-6, 7-6 (5), 7-5.
In order to win the second-set tiebreaker, Rune rallied from a match-point deficit and saved it. Nevertheless, Wawrinka bounced back in the third to eliminate his 19-year-old rival.
Wawrinka admitted that the final 45 minutes were challenging.
“I was playing well and had the game under control. I put a lot of pressure on myself, and I ought to have won the game much earlier.
“In my career, I’ve only known one approach to succeed: to keep battling, working, pushing myself, and remaining upbeat. I am overjoyed by the victory.”
For the first time since losing in the championship match in 2017, when he will turn 38 in April, Wawrinka advanced to the fourth round in the Southern California desert.
