Nottingham Open: Andy Murray, the top seed, advanced to the quarter-finals of the Nottingham Open with a victory over France’s Hugo Grenier.
The 36-year-old Scot won his sixth straight grass title and claims to be in the greatest physical shape he’s been in since his hip replacement.
Murray won his first event in the United Kingdom since winning Wimbledon in 2016 at Surbiton last week, and he has extended his excellent form in the East Midlands, defeating Frenchman Hugo Grenier 6-3 7-5.
Murray’s career was disrupted in 2018 by a hip resurfacing surgery in which a metal implant replaced his bone, and he has struggled with fitness ever since.
Despite the extended run of matches, his mobility on the Nottingham grass is as excellent as ever, and he feels in fantastic form.
“In terms of physically how I’ve been, the last six to nine months have been really good, and that has been the best I’ve felt since my surgery, which is very positive,” he said.
“I’m playing a lot of matches. I usually feel at ease on grass courts, so the next two weeks will be a good litmus test for me.
“I’m not sure if I’m playing at my best overall level because, no disrespect to the players I’m playing against; I know they’re very good players, but when you’re playing against guys in the top 10 in the world, they’re able to expose certain things in your game a little bit more as well.”

Murray hopes to spend the remainder of the week in Nottingham before returning to his old haunts at Queen’s the following week.
The Scot thinks that this is all excellent practice for the All England Club next month, when he may be seeded again.
“It’s been great to get lots of matches; you never know how this will affect you in two or three weeks,” he added. “I’m doing my best to give myself the best preparation I can for Wimbledon.”
