Tennis Live: The Australian newspaper claimed on Wednesday that Nick Kyrgios will reveal in forthcoming episodes of a Netflix series that he spent time in a mental institution after losing at Wimbledon in 2019.
In the second round of the championships that year, the 28-year-old was knocked out by Rafael Nadal despite wearing a white sleeve to cover up his right arm.
“I was genuinely considering suicide,” Kyrgios confesses in an episode of the documentary BreakPoint, which will be published later this month, according to The Australian.
“I was defeated in Wimbledon.” My father was crying uncontrollably on the bed when I awakened. That was my major wake-up call. Okay, I can’t keep doing this, I thought. I ended myself in a psychiatric institution in London to work out my issues.”
In February of last year, Kyrgios posted a lengthy Instagram post about his mental health concerns, at the end of which he declared that he was in a much better place.
“I’m proud to say that I’ve completely turned myself around and have a completely different outlook on everything, and I don’t take one single moment for granted,” he wrote.
“I want you to be able to reach your full potential while remaining cheerful. This life is beautiful.”
The Break Point episodes follow Kyrgios on his trip to last year’s Wimbledon final, the pinnacle of his career thus far, eliciting memories of his 2019 low point.
“I couldn’t manage the strain of having everyone’s attention on you. I despised the type of person I was,” he acknowledges.
“I was drinking, using drugs, losing contact with my family, and pushing all of my close friends away.
“You could tell I was in pain. Scars covered my entire arm. That’s how I ended up with an arm sleeve. to cover everything.”
Kyrgios or a representative could not be reached for comment by Reuters.
Kyrgios’s comeback was halted by a knee injury around the turn of the year. He returned to action on Tuesday, but he was defeated in his first encounter at the Stuttgart Open.
