Due to a knee issue, Nick Kyrgios withdrew from the Australian Open.
The No. 1 seed from Australia, who is among the favourites after winning his maiden Grand Slam singles match at Wimbledon last summer, missed a warm-up match due to a knee issue.
He participated in a charity match on Friday against Novak Djokovic and did not make any indication that his participation was in doubt, but on Monday afternoon, he called an impromptu press conference and expressed his “devastation” at having to withdraw because of a small tear in his lateral meniscus (knee).
I know. Trust me, my heart is broken. But I’m on the table Monday to get fixed, I’ll be back! https://t.co/IZuZ7uHzbX

“I’m certainly devastated,” Kyrgios remarked. “My neighbourhood tournament. Here, I have some wonderful recollections. Obviously, I played the best tennis of my life last year, winning the doubles championship.
“Then it’s brutal coming into this event as one of the favourites. I can only move forward at this point, complete my tasks, and then return.”
According to physio Will Maher, Kyrgios’ knee has been bothering him for a few weeks due to a tiny tear in the meniscus, therefore it made sense for him to withdraw from the competition.
Australian Open: Kyrgios claimed he had given himself every opportunity to compete
A hit on Monday morning with doubles partner Thanasi Kokkinakis convinced him he had to withdraw.
The “Special Ks” Kyrgios and Kokkinakis will also be unable to defend the men’s doubles championship they won at Melbourne Park last year as a result of their withdrawal.
Will Maher, Kyrgios’ physiotherapist, said the Australian’s left meniscus had developed a tiny tear that had resulted in a cyst that needed to be surgically removed.
To his credit, Nick made every effort; in fact, last week, he underwent a treatment called a fenestration and drainage in which a syringe was used to try to drain the cyst. Nick has some graphic photos of this procedure.
“We tested his ability to perform at that greatest level in the charity match versus Novak. Even though he didn’t pull up well, he nevertheless made an effort to give himself every opportunity to work out the following days. But it was obvious that he was becoming increasingly sore with each session that went by.”

After a hit on Monday with his dear buddy Thanasi Kokkinakis, with whom he won the doubles title last year, Kyrgios ultimately made the choice.
Kyrgios claimed, “He pushed me around the court a little bit.” “Making the call was simpler today.
“It’s uncomfortable. It just keeps aching after I finish a session or a match. The previous four or five nights, I hardly got any rest.”
The good news for Kyrgios is that he should be able to recover quickly and play in the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells at the beginning of March.
