Tennis News: Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios admitted to hitting his ex-girlfriend in Australia but was not prosecuted because of his plea deal.
Despite describing the ordinary attack as an act of “stupidity” and “frustration,” a magistrate in Canberra, the home city of the tennis star, did not record a conviction against the 27-year-old.
In a fight in January 2021, the 2022 Wimbledon runner-up knocked his ex-girlfriend Chiara Passari to the ground.
Additionally, Magistrate Beth Campbell threw out the charge because it was a relatively minor common assault.
Following recent surgery on his left knee, Kyrgios, who was using crutches, did not answer questions from the media as he exited the court but instead released a statement via his management business.
Kyrgios remarked, “I respect today’s decision and am appreciative to the court for dismissing the allegations without conviction.”
“When this incident occurred, I was not in a good frame of mind, and I responded to a challenging circumstance in a way I sincerely regret. I genuinely apologise for the hurt I caused. I know it wasn’t appropriate.
“Mental health is challenging. Sometimes life can seem too much. But I’ve discovered that seeking treatment and improving myself has made me feel and be better.”
Although a psychologist testified before the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Magistrates Court that Kyrgios had previously experienced significant dejection, suicidal thoughts, and insomnia, his mental health has improved.
Sam Borenstein, Kyrgios’ psychologist, testified over the phone and in a written report on Friday that the tennis player had previously experienced serious depressive episodes and had used alcohol and narcotics to cope.
Impulsive and careless behaviour had been a result of his mental health. Mr Borenstein continued, saying that although Kyrgios’ recent knee injury had caused mild to moderate depressive symptoms, his mental health was getting better.
Prior attempts by Kyrgios’ attorneys to get the assault allegation resulting from incidents two years ago removed on the basis of mental health issues failed.
In February of last year, Kyrgios was open about his performance at the Australian Open 2019, admitting that what had at first appeared to be a pleasant time in his life had actually been “one of my darkest periods.”
He stated on Instagram, “I was lonely, depressed, negative, abusing booze, drugs, and pushing away family and friends.”
