Tennis News: Nick Kyrgios opened out about the pressure of being a tennis prodigy and said that he used to drink “five to six times a week” when competing.
The Wimbledon finalist had a fantastic 2022 and came close to winning his first Grand Slam, but he had trouble with the game in his early years.
After defeating Rafael Nadal in a thrilling Wimbledon fourth-round match as a 19-year-old, Kyrgios, who had just become a pro, shot to fame.
According to Kyrgios on Logan Paul’s Impulsive podcast, “I didn’t reach the heights as quickly as people [anticipated], and then it was like ‘Kyrgios is a waste of potential’ and it spiralled out of control.”
“That was challenging to handle. When I defeated Nadal, it happened overnight. I had people camped out in front of my house, and I wasn’t sure how to handle it.
“I believe I was drinking five to six times a week about three or four years ago, which was incredibly bad considering I was still competing at the highest level. Simply put, it is unsustainable.
“When I first opened my eyes, I was up against Nadal, [Stefanos] Tsitsipas, and those guys. It was the worst I had ever been, and yet I won a tournament doing it. I am more in control now.”
The Aussie believes he can still win a Grand Slam, but he reaffirmed that he would stop playing tennis if he did. His 2023 season was delayed due to an injury that prevented him from competing in the Australian Open.

“I believe I can take home the Grand Slam. Although I was two sets away, it was strange and not for me. It’s for the rest of us. I could now simply unwind,” he said.
“The Wimbledon championship in 2022 was my chance. If I had prevailed, I would have taken a year or two off from work. For me, it’s more of a pastime.
“I would relax at home and play video games. On the court, I can be quite impulsive and experience many ups and downs. It’s practically impossible.
“Every action is taken alone. It is contact-free boxing. It’s challenging for me since you lose every week in tennis. It’s cruel because there is only one winner each week.”
