Davis Cup Match: Rafael Nadal has said that he would be open to competing in a final Davis Cup match at home and in front of the Spanish public. The legendary Spanish tennis player acknowledged that the uncertainty surrounding his Davis Cup participation persists at this point in his career due to a carefully planned annual tennis schedule, but he would still like to compete in the renowned event “one last time.”
2019 marked Nadal’s final Davis Cup appearance, and he won his fifth world-team championship. With frequent appearances from Carlos Alcaraz, Pablo Carreno Busta, Roberto Bautista Agut, and others, the Spanish squad has no shortage of star power, and the addition of Nadal would unquestionably make them one of the title contenders.
Knowing that his odds of competing in the Davis Cup at this point in his career are slim, the 36-year-old Spaniard would be content with just one more opportunity. He did, however, recently state that he is still really driven to play for his nation and be a part of a “very complete team.”
“I know I don’t have many options left with Davis, but in a perfect scenario, I would like to play one more time and say farewell. But a calendar exists, and I have no idea what will occur,” In a recent interview with Cadena SER, he stated.
“Having a very complete team and playing in Spain adds to the desire. However, the desire to play for your country has always been the greatest. But as time passes,” The Spanish speaker added.
Former World No. 3 David Ferrer will lead the Spanish Davis Cup squad as a non-playing captain for the upcoming competition and, ideally, for a few more Davis Cups to come.
In addition to thanking former captain Sergi Bruguera for his work, Nadal welcomed the addition of his fellow countryman Ferrer, a close friend and one of his most formidable former competitors.
“Sergi Bruguera deserves special recognition since he has guided us to successful outcomes. With David, a new age has begun. We’ve talked a lot together,” The legendary Spanish figure said.
