French Open: Rafael Nadal has long been associated with the French Open; Roger Federer feels that losing him to Roland Garros would be a “brutal” blow to tennis.
As he continues to heal from a hip injury acquired during his Australian Open second-round loss to Mackenzie McDonald, Nadal is doubtful to play in his 19th match at the clay Grand Slam.
The 14-time French Open champion confessed at the end of April that he still didn’t know when he would be able to play again after being forced to withdraw from the Madrid Open because the initial recovery period of six to eight weeks had already gone.
Rafael Nadal’s absence would be “brutal,” said Roger Federer to Sky Sports. “It would be tough for tennis if Rafa isn’t going to be there.”
“I still hope so, and I wish him the best because I saw that he left Rome.
“Obviously, Novak hasn’t played much lately, so I hope he’ll be strong as well as all the young players emerging.
“I’ll definitely be watching.”
The 36-year-old currently holds the record for both the highest clay court match-winning percentage (91.3) and the highest match-winning % overall at major clay court tournaments.
He has experienced fitness difficulties throughout the latter stages of his career, and last year, when he was forced to withdraw from his semi-final due to an abdominal rupture, he was denied the opportunity to win a third Wimbledon title.
Since then, Nadal has only won six of his fourteen matches, and he just stated he would not be competing in the Rome Masters.
He posted on social media, “You all know how much it hurts me to miss another one of the tournaments that have marked my professional and personal career for all the love and support of the Italian tifosi,”
The re-adaptation process takes time, and despite recent improvements, it has taken several months for me to be able to train at a high level. I have no choice but to accept this and keep trying.
