Surbiton Trophy: Katie Boulter is the new British No. 1 women’s tennis player after reaching the Surbiton Trophy semi-finals last week.
Boulter is ranked 126th in the world, two places ahead of Emma Raducanu, and is scheduled to miss Wimbledon for at least another month due to hand and ankle surgery.
Raducanu last competed in April at the Stuttgart Open, although he has battled injuries and a lack of fitness since his victory at Flushing Meadows two years ago.
She rose to world No. 10 before falling out of the top 100 early this year and splitting with her sixth coach in less than two years, Sebastian Sachs, earlier this month.
Meanwhile, Boulter reached the third round of Wimbledon last year and has enjoyed success this season on the ITF Circuit.
Katie Swan had a chance to become British No. 1 if she won the Surbiton Trophy, but she fell to Yanina Wickmayer 2-6, 6-4, 7-6.
“Naturally, I am very proud to be joining the women who have come before me in reaching that historic milestone,” Boulter said. “However, my main goal continues to be to improve my ranking and to work hard.
“Because we’re all so close in the rankings, it’ll be an exciting summer.”
Sabalenka cuts Swiatek’s lead in the fight for world number one.
Iga Swiatek’s third French Open triumph kept her at the top of the WTA rankings, however, Aryna Sabalenka is just 912 points behind heading into the grass-court season.
Swiatek was defending the 2000 points she earned from her Roland-Garros victory in 2022, and Sabalenka’s stunning semi-final loss to Karolina Muchova ensured the Pole remained the woman to beat.
Elena Rybakina had to withdraw from the third round due to sickness, but she has moved up to third position, ahead of Carolina Garcia and Jessica Pegula.
Muchova’s incredible run to the final has vaulted her to 16th in the rankings, while Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia has broken into the top 10 for the first time in her career after reaching the last four in Paris.
