Tennis News: Daniil Medvedev, a former world number one, recently made light of Djokovic’s ambition to compete in Australia and his anticipation of facing the World No. 7 in the quarterfinals of the Adelaide International.
The Russian defeated Karen Khachanov with ease, 6-3, 6-3, in the tournament’s quarterfinals. The 26-year-old made it into the final eight by hitting six aces. The Adelaide International finalist for the 2022 Australian Open has not yet lost a set.
When asked if he will be watching the second quarterfinal match between Djokovic and Denis Shapovalov in an on-court post-match interview, the 2021 US Open champion responded jokingly that Djokovic is a winner who likes to play in Australia.
“One of them has a lot of titles and enjoys playing in Australia,” according to Medvedev.
The winner of the 2020 ATP Finals continued to laud Shapovalov and predicted that he would eventually have a chance to defeat the Serbian for the first match.
Although Denis has yet to defeat Novak, Medvedev said, “the opportunity is going to come once someday because he is such a powerful player. But yes, I am going to watch their match because you never know what’s going to happen.”
The World No. 7 added that he will be monitoring the contest in order to get ready to take on the victor.
I will watch their game and get ready for the winner, he continued.
The first round of the Adelaide International for Novak Djokovic
The Serbian master began his 2023 season with the Adelaide International after a remarkable 2022 campaign that saw him go from getting deported from Australia and ultimately missing out on two Grand Slams to winning his 21st Grand Slam singles title and a record-tying sixth ATP Finals.
The top seed met France’s Constant Lestienne in the round of 32 of the first tournament of the year. The Serb easily defeated the Frenchman after hitting four aces. Djokovic faced up against Quentin Halys in the second round of his Round of 16 matches. Despite the 35-year-best old’s efforts against Halys, the latter prevailed 7-6(3), 7-6(5).
To compete for a berth in the tournament’s semifinals, the veteran will face seventh-seeded Shapovalov.
