Tennis News: Breast and throat cancer have both been identified in Martina Navratilova.
In 2010, the former world No. 1 received treatment for early-stage breast cancer.
The 59-time grand slam singles and doubles champion Navratilova will not attend the Australian Open this month, where she had planned to serve as a TV analyst.
Although serious, this double whammy is still fixable, and I’m hopeful for a successful outcome. It will stink for a while, but I’ll fight with everything I’ve got, stated Navratilova.
Navratilova’s prognosis was termed as “excellent” in a statement issued by the 66-year-representative old’s after the diagnosis was confirmed.
The announcement said, “Martina Navratilova has been diagnosed with stage one throat cancer.” Martina will begin her treatment this month because the outlook is favourable.
“The malignancy is of the HPV variety, and this variety responds particularly well to therapy. During the WTA Finals in Fort Worth, Martina became aware of an increase in a lymph node in her neck. A biopsy was done when it didn’t go down, and the results revealed stage one throat cancer.
“Martina was receiving tests for throat cancer when a suspicious form was discovered in her breast. This form was later determined to be cancer and had nothing to do with throat cancer.
“These two malignancies are both in the early stages and have excellent prognoses. Martina expects to occasionally participate through Zoom but won’t be covering the Australian Open for Tennis Channel from their studio.”
