Tennis News: After recently disclosing her cancer diagnosis, tennis legend Martina Navratilova said she was overwhelmed by the outpouring of love for her.
13 years after radiation treatment enabled her to make a full recovery from breast cancer, the former World No. 1 revealed on Monday that she was found to have Stage 1 throat cancer as well as a recurrent case of breast cancer.
The tennis world rallied around the 18-time Grand Slam singles champion and wished her a fast recovery. On social media, Navratilova said that messages and support from individuals had been “popping up” on her phone.
Without further ado, the American tweeted, “Needless to say, my phone and twitter are both blowing up so I will say again- thank you everybody for your support and I am not done yet:) Xoxoxo.”
Navratilova described receiving her diagnosis as a “double whammy” in her statement, but she pledged to combat the illness.
Although dangerous, this double whammy can still be resolved. I’m hoping for a good result. Although it may stink for a time, I’ll fight tooth and nail, she vowed.
The likes of Billie Jean King and other tennis legends back Martina Navratilova.
Billie Jean King, a tennis star and one of Martina Navratilova’s fiercest competitors, expressed her support for the 66-year-old on social media following the announcement of her cancer diagnosis.
King extended her best wishes to Navratilova and described her as “strong” and “brave.”
“@Martina is as brave as she is strong. She has fought this battle before, and she is in our thoughts and prayers,” tweeted King.
Chris Evert, another 18-time Grand Slam singles champion and close friend of Navratilova, also offered her support while praising the fortitude of her countrywoman.
“Today, I’m thinking of @Martina and sending her love and prayers as she supported mine. This woman is strong and resilient when facing hardships… Martina, you’ve got this!” Evert tweeted.
The American was referred to as a “real fighter” by Carla Suarez Navarro, who just overcame her own cancer diagnosis.
“@Martina, I’m sending you hope and courage. You’ve always been a real fighter who has triumphed over numerous difficulties, and this time won’t be any different. I am thinking of you,” She spoke.
